In Days Gone By | Wolves & City

Sol Bamba in action for City against Wolves.

Missed penalties, both promoted, trading victories, exceptional hat-tricks and FA Cup stunners...

In the most recent seasons we've faced Wolves in the league we've shared the bragging rights.

In 2018, Junior Hoilett scored a stunner as the Bluebirds came back from 1-0 down at half-time to defeat Wolves at Cardiff City Stadium in the Premier League.

Sadly, that was followed by a 2-0 defeat away in March of 2019, where an early showing from the hosts blew City away, with Sol Bamba's ACL rupture adding to a poor day on the road.

The season before our clashes with Wolves were equally memorable. City began the season with three straight wins before travelling to Molineux and facing a Wolves side who had spent heavily, with big expectations on their shoulders. Joe Ralls and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored for the Bluebirds in a 2-1 impressive August away win.

From a City standpoint, the least said about our top of the table clash with Wolves from April 2018, the better. Rúben Neves' stunning strike gave the away side the advantage at CCS, but the Bluebirds had two chances to level the game in added time from the penalty spot. Gary Madine and Hoilett were unable to find the net though.

Sean Morrison and Sol Bamba in action for City against Wolves.

Impressively, after the game, City icon Bamba asked to do press, standing up to the disappointment to give a rousing statement.

“We never get too high when we win or too low when we lose,” said Sol. “We’re obviously disappointed, but we’ll pick ourselves up and go again now. Sometimes football isn’t fair, but you move on.

“We play football to play in big games. I think everybody saw the effort we put in, but unfortunately we came out on the wrong side of the result.

“We stick together as a group, win or lose. This is a strong group and it’s our job  to make sure everyone rests up and then goes again."

And with leaders like Sol in the dressing room, it all ended up well. Wolves went on to win the title, and City joined them in the top flight as runners-up.

Peter Whittingham scores a stunning free-kick against Wolves in 2012.

In September 2012, City welcomed the Old Gold to Cardiff City Stadium for our second home game of the campaign.

As rare occasions go, arguably the most impressive player on the pitch that day didn't score the hat-trick.

Bakary Sako opened the scoring for Wolves 10 minutes in, but Peter Whittingham levelled from the spot one minute later. By minute 14, we were ahead as Whitts lashed into the net from distance.

The player standing out to all in attendance in South Wales though was debutant Craig Noone. He tortured the away defence throughout, putting in a remarkable first 73 minute outing. He always enjoyed playing against Wolves...

Understandably though, the MOTM award would go to City legend, Whittingham, who sealed his third with a beautiful free-kick.

After the game, Whitts, in his traditional nonchalant fashion, said: "To go a goal down and show the character we did was brilliant. To get a goal back when we did was important and I thought we went on from there. The hat-trick was nice, but it's always about the points."

The Bluebirds would also defeat Wolves away from home that campaign, with January signing Fraizer Campbell scoring twice in a 2-1 win.

Wolves would finish that season 23rd and suffer relegation, while the Bluebirds won the league superbly.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink celebrates his goal against Wolves in 2008.

Whitts had already made his mark for the Bluebirds against Wolves back in 2008. The Bluebirds faced off against the Old Gold during our iconic FA Cup run to the final.

City took the lead at Ninian Park thanks to our number 7, assisted by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Whitts returned the favour to Jimmy for our second, but you have to say that the clinical striker did the hard bit for himself.

Hasselbaink rolled back the years, taking aim from distance and with the venom you'd expect from him.

This goal was to be the penultimate goal of Hasselbaink's impressive career. He would score once more for the Bluebirds, away at Scunthorpe United.
