City Women were defeated by Wrexham at Cardiff City Stadium in the Adran Premier on Sunday evening.
MATCH SUMMARY
Wrexham flew out of the blocks in the opening stages of the contest. Mikalya Cook put the Red Dragons ahead after four minutes. Cook pounced on a loose ball inside the City box before finding the bottom-right corner.
After withstanding some further pressure from the away side, City held firm before finding an equaliser. Haile Richards reacted quickest at the back post from a corner to net her first goal for the Club, sending an excellent left-footed effort into the roof of the net.
The goal settled the Bluebirds into the contest, and they began to grow in confidence on the ball. However, it was the away side who took the lead once again, as Natasha Thomas’ first-time finish from a low cross found the bottom corner.
Just four minutes later, City equalised for the second time with their set pieces causing further trouble for Wrexham. After coming close on the initial corner, City recycled possession through Ffion Price, who sent a magnificent left-footed pass out to Mackenzie Olden. The forward cut inside before seeing her deflected strike nestle into the bottom corner.
An enthralling first-half at the Cardiff City Stadium saw four goals scored, with the two sides going into the interval level. The visitors made the quicker start in the second half and regained their lead inside ten minutes of the restart.
Katie Barker restored the visitors’ advantage with an individual effort from outside the 18-yard box. City pushed for a late equaliser, but Wrexham sealed all three points with their fourth goal as Evie Sadler finished a quick counter-attack.
Despite showing plenty of attacking endeavour in the closing stages, the Bluebirds were ultimately defeated in a six-goal encounter at Cardiff City Stadium.
PRE-MATCH | NOAH BUSHBY
"Sunday's fixture will be a great occasion that we're looking forward to. The opportunity to play at Cardiff City Stadium is always something that we enjoy, and we'll aim to get a positive result for our fans.
"Training this week has been at a very high level and it's clear that the squad are eager to bounce back. The result on the opening day was frustrating because we created good chances and had large spells in the game where we were on top. This is a new squad that are gelling, and I'm confident that we'll continue to improve.
"Wrexham will provide a stern test and we're relishing the challenge of going head-to-head with them. We had some great battles with them last season and Sunday should be no different.
"The support that we had from our fans at Swansea was fantastic. They got behind our squad for the entire 90 minutes and we always appreciate their support. The fans will have a big part to play on Sunday, and we'll approach the game with togetherness."
PRE-MATCH | ELLA HILLIARD
“This is the perfect opportunity for us to bounce back. It really stung to lose a derby. We know how big that is and we wanted to start our season off well. The aim is to put that right on Sunday and it’s a big game at the stadium against Wrexham. All of us will be up for it and we’ll look to show everyone what we’re made of.
“We have the character in the squad to bounce back. There are so many new players in the squad and we’ve gelled really well so far, that will only get better. Our mindset is one of getting as many wins and points as we can. The targets are very clear and we’re all on board with them.
“These are games that you want to be involved in. We know the challenge that Wrexham will bring, they have a strong squad and have recruited well over the summer, so they’ll be fighting for the win on Sunday. We know what to expect and training this week has been working towards that.
“Being a Cardiff City fan, playing at CCS is special. You don’t want to be playing anywhere else. It will be a great occasion and we’re excited to see our fans get behind us.”
