The Tykes come to Cardiff City Stadium 15th in the Sky Bet League One table. But, it's a bit of a false position.
Barnsley have up to five games in hand on other teams in the league at this stage. They have even played four games less than the Bluebirds.
The Tykes currently have 33 points, and sit nine points outside the play-off spots. A run of victories in their owed games could propel them up the table in a big way.
From their three January league fixtures, Barnsley have five points - drawing with Reading last time out and Wigan Athletic to open the month, while recording a victory over Blackpool at home in the middle. They also had the challenge of visiting Liverpool in the Emirates FA Cup during the opening month of 2026.
Their last away league win came on November 8th, defeating Doncaster Rovers, 2-1. While that may seem like a while back, Conor Hourihane's side should not be underestimated. In recent months they have taken points off promotion chasers Bradford City and Stockport County on the road.

Forward Davis Keillor-Dunn has enjoyed two fruitful seasons since moving to Oakwell in the summer of 2024. The former Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Newcastle United youth player struck 18 times during his first campaign at the club, winning the Player of the Year award in the process, and he's been equally impressive this time around too. Keillor-Dunn has a 1:2 goal record this term, striking 11 times in the league from 22 matches.
David McGoldrick began his professional playing career in 2004 and has been scoring goals ever since. McGoldrick joined Barnsley during the summer of 2025 having just finished two seasons back with his first club, Notts County. The 38-year-old has eight goals in all competitions this season, with five coming in the league.
Conor Hourihane has made three signings during the January transfer window. Centre-back Eoghan O'Connell moved from Wrexham while winger Charlie Lennon signed for an undisclosed fee from Middlesbrough. On-loan, Owen Goodman linked up with the Tykes from Crystal Palace, having previously had a spell with Huddersfield Town earlier this campaign.
The captain for Barnsley is former Bolton Wanderers central midfielder Luca Connell, who has been with the club since the summer of 2022.

Callum Paterson's first City goal came in interesting circumstances against tomorrow evening's opponents. Late and great! 💙
And, let's be fair, there is plenty of technique in that slide tackle! 👏#CityAsOne pic.twitter.com/AuFlEIsj1F— Cardiff City FC (@CardiffCityFC) January 26, 2026
IN DAYS GONE BY
21/11/2017 | Barnsley 0-1 Cardiff City
We can't look back on a game against Barnsley from earlier this season, as our away fixture was postponed due to international call-ups and will instead be played in March. So for this article, we've delved back into the archives.
Callum Paterson celebrated the first senior hat-trick of his career this past weekend for MK Dons. But as Bluebirds fans know very well, he's always had a great eye for goal.
Paterson actually scored his first ever hat-trick for City's U23 side during a 3-3 draw with Blackburn Rovers while rehabbing from a long-term knee injury. He spoke about this in the below excerpt from the matchday programme, The Bluebird.
After showing off his talents with the younger age group, Paterson was thrust into First Team action by Neil Warnock during October of 2017.
He had to wait until Oakwell for his first senior City goal, and that game winning moment came in extraordinary fashion.
While attacking has always been a strong point for Paterson, he was welcomed to the Club as a right sided defender. His effort on that cold November night was the slide tackle of a defensive player, that somehow diverted the ball into the top corner of the net.
Paterson's celebrations while with City went on to be a real highlight, and he certainly started strong on that evening as well.
