Match Report | Blackburn Rovers 2-1 Cardiff City

Jack Moylan
Cardiff City were defeated by Blackburn Rovers on Saturday afternoon.

Two first half goals put the Bluebirds behind before the interval, proving too much for City to overcome in the second.

Brian Barry-Murphy made three changes to the side that started against Charlton Athletic before the international break, with Callum Robinson and Dylan Lawlor making their first league starts of the campaign alongside Cian Ashford making his return.

Joel Colwill

City had the first chance of the match with less than a minute played, as Jack Moylan worked a ball to Robinson inside the area. The forward was dispossessed after taking his first touch, however.

The visitors continued to create half chances from their wealth of possession throughout the opening passages, but couldn’t find a desired early opener. Moylan came closest when Joel Colwill found him inside the area, but he too was tackled before being able to line up an effort on goal.

Blackburn Rovers established a lead on the half hour mark and doubled it ten minutes later. Andri Guðjohnsen fired home for the first, with Todd Cantwell doubling the lead from a similar position inside the area, though Nathan Trott got a palm to the effort.

With Rovers in the ascendancy for the remainder of the half, City had to weather the storm and denied the hosts further chances before the whistle blew for the break.

The Bluebirds halved the deficit in the opening minutes of the second half, with Robinson making the impact. Moylan was unselfish in laying a ball off to the forward inside the area, with Callum poised to strike his first goal of the season with an effort that flew in low at the near post.

The match continued to open up following City’s first, with chances shared in quick succession as both sides searched for the fourth goal of the afternoon.

Ollie Tanner

Nathan Trott did very well from a number of set-pieces, making his presence known inside his area. On the occasion that Nathan was beaten at close range, Joel Bagan was there on the goal line to clear away.

The back-and-forth continued as both sides traded blows into the dying minutes, and with the final play of the match deep in injury time, City were denied by a cluster of blue shirts packed inside the Blackburn area.

The Bluebirds are at Cardiff City Stadium for their next fixture, hosting Watford on Tuesday night – 7:45pm KO.
