Match Report | Cardiff City 3-0 Rotherham United

Rubin Colwill
Cardiff City made it back-to-back home league victories following a 3-0 win over Rotherham United at Cardiff City stadium on Saturday afternoon.

City claimed three points in style, dominating possession and chances alike while recording three separate goalscorers in the South Wales sunshine.

Yousef Salech

Brian Barry-Murphy made four changes to the side that started our last League One fixture against Port Vale, with David TurnbullCian AshfordWill Fish and City debutant Dakarai Mafico all coming into the line-up.

The Bluebirds started brightly and forced an early chance. Following a cross from Ollie Tanner, the ball fell to Yousef Salech in the box with his back to goal, who turned well before having an effort saved by Cameron Dawson.

City’s pressure on Rotherham’s backline continued throughout the first-half. Rubin Colwill had a fantastic opportunity to square the ball into a City player, but his pass was crucially blocked by a red shirt.

After looking dangerous in the opening period, the Bluebirds broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute. A terrific corner delivery from Turnbull met the head of Salech, who converted from close range to put City one ahead.

Barry-Murphy’s men took a one-goal advantage into half-time after controlling much of the first half.

Following the interval, City continued to attack with confidence and were eventually rewarded with a second. Turnbull, getting his second assist of the afternoon, set it back to Ashford who curled his shot brilliantly into the top-left corner from just inside the area.

Just five minutes later, the Bluebirds would make it three. After opening his EFL League One tally in the first half, Salech played a low ball across the box to Rubin Colwill, who tapped home to put City beyond reach of the visitors.

Cian Ashford

City continued to dominate after making it three. Substitute Joel Colwill nearly made it four-nil following a great quick pass from Callum Robinson, but unfortunately he could not quite convert.

In the 86th minute, Marvin Kaleta forced Nathan Trott into a diving save, as the visitors’ first shot of the afternoon was palmed away by the 'keeper.

With the final whistle blown, City maintained their unbeaten start to the 2025/26 season with another dominant performance in front of a delighted home crowd.

Cardiff City will next be in action on Tuesday, as they take on AFC Wimbledon at Plough Lane - Kick-Off at 7:45pm.
