City extended their unbeaten run to eight games after a convincing 4-0 win over Barnsley on Tuesday night.
Brian Barry-Murphy made three changes to the side that drew with Stockport County on Saturday. Will Fish, Omari Kellyman and Chris Willock all returned to the starting XI.
It was a lightning fast start from City, who took the lead with only three minutes played. A cross-field ball from Kellyman found Ollie Tanner, who played an exquisite through ball to the overlapping Perry Ng. The defender made no mistake, firing in at the near post.
The Bluebirds almost doubled their lead through Tanner. Willock’s in-swinging cross found the City wide man but he couldn’t adjust himself in time and placed his effort just wide of the post. Ng then went close to his and City’s second as a short corner found the fullback on the edge of the box and he unleashed a curling effort just over the bar.
Barnsley’s first sight of goal fell to Davis Keillor-Dunn, who found space to drive into and unleashed a powerful curling effort but Nathan Trott produced a superb diving save to keep City ahead.
On the stroke of half-time, Barry-Murphy's side grabbed a second. Kellyman found Willock on the left-hand side, who shifted the ball onto his right foot and calmly slotted the ball into the far corner.
Barnsley started the second period in search of a goal, with a chance falling to Patrick Kelly, who worked the ball well but the midfielder's effort was easily saved by Trott.
Despite the visitors' early pressure, City then extended their lead with 62 minutes played. Willock returned the favour for the third as his through ball found Kellyman, who comfortably swept the ball past Owen Goodman in the Barnsley net.
Moments later, Willock put the Bluebirds into dreamland as he capitalised on a mistake at the back, putting him through one-on-one, which gave him all the time in the world as he chipped the ball over Goodman and made it 4-0.
Substitute Callum Robinson twice went close to making it five in stoppage time. The first flew just past the upright, and the second crashed off the underside of the bar after a fingertip save from Goodman.
The Bluebirds are back on the road this Saturday, travelling to the Pirelli Stadium to face Burton Albion in a 3pm kick-off.
