An impressive performance from the Bluebirds saw them victorious in their final pre-season fixture on Saturday afternoon.
City found their first in no time: Ollie Tanner did a brilliant job on the right hand side as his low cross missed everyone before the eventual clearance hit Cian Ashford and found its way past Mile Svilar to put the hosts ahead early on.
Cardiff City's bright start continued with a chance minutes later for Chris Willock, who whipped it towards the far corner, challenging the Roma shotstopper once again.
Remaining on top thereafter, Joel Colwill was played in by Ashford, but Joel’s effort was deflected just wide of the post.
City's high press - utilised by Yousef Salech - worked brilliantly near the half hour mark as the striker charged down Svilar's attempted clearance, the ball again finding the back of the Roma net.
Roma looked likely to fight back as they were awarded a penalty-kick following a counter. However, Paulo Dybala stepped up to take the shot and Nathan Trott got down to his right hand side to keep the Argentinian's effort out.
The visitors followed it up with two big chances, but again Trott was there with one great save, and the resulting corner led to a header that was glanced wide.
City quickly responded to the Roma chances before the half was out, with Salech providing the knockdown to Cian Ashford who found the net from close range, doubling his tally for the afternoon.
The first real chance after the interval came the way of the visitors, as Dybala tried to make up for his earlier miss from the spot, but his looping head didn't trouble the substitute Harry Tyrer.
However, it was Dybala who gave the Giallorossi their sole goal of the afternoon. A nicely worked cross into the penalty area was struck well, reducing the deficit with 30 minutes to go.
Shortly afterwards, the Bluebirds struck back to regain their three-goal advantage: a long ball reached Tanner, who drove towards the box and struck it into the net in front of the obliging Canton Stand.
Roma started to add more pressure to the City backline and Brian Barry-Murhpy turned to his bench for reinforcements, which included a return to CCS for Eli King and the introduction of Academy player Noah Anyadike.
The visitors kept up the pressure and Matias Soule forced a nice save of Tyrer down to his right hand side, pushing the ball around the post. Donyell Malen later saw his free-kick from just outside the box hit the roof of the net.
Roma had time for a few more chances in stoppage time, but were denied further as Tyrer pushed away one effort from Emanuele Lulli before a header from the following corner rebounded out off the post.
The final whistle confirmed a positive end to pre-season action for City, who now look towards their first competitive fixture when they face Swindon Town in the Carabao Cup at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, August 8th (3:00pm KO).
