Match Report | Cardiff City 5-1 Watford

The Bluebirds celebrate at CCS against Watford.
The Bluebirds put in a fantastic display at Cardiff City Stadium, defeating Watford, 5-1, on Tuesday night.

Jack Moylan opened the scoring from the penalty spot, before clinically adding a second goal after 35 minutes. City scored two further efforts before the break, as Watford skipper Mattie Pollock put the ball into his own net, before Ollie Tanner cut in from the right and struck into the bottom corner.

Callum Robinson made it five after coming off the substitutes bench and while Hector Kyprianou scored a late consolation for the Hornets, it was a positive night and performance from the City at their CCS home.

Brian Barry-Murphy made one change to the side that were defeated at Blackburn Rovers with Chris Willock coming in for Callum Robinson.

The Bluebirds have been in good form on home soil this term and in terms of play, started sharper than their opponents, but the Hornets did have an early chance. Nathan Trott with a fine save to deny Myron Boadu within three minutes. After that, it was all one way traffic for the opening 45 minutes as the Bluebirds had some fun.

Jack Moylan was taken down inside the box after 11 minutes, and the Republic of Ireland international stepped up from the spot to give City the lead.

The same man made it two-nil 35 minutes in. Moylan was found in space by Cian Ashford and he made no mistake, one-on-one, slotting the ball in off the post.

A third Bluebirds goal came six minutes later from a corner kick. Joel Bagan’s set piece was diverted into his own net by Watford captain Mattie Pollock.

The first half finished in brilliant fashion as Ollie Tanner cut in from the right wing before firing a low left footed effort into the bottom corner to give BBM’s side a four goal advantage.

The only downside of the opening half saw Dylan Lawlor forced off through injury. A positive however was Will Fish’s assured performance replacing him, on his first outing of the campaign.

City had a chance to make it 5-0 after 65 minutes as Willock was felled in the box. Chris took the responsibility to take the spot kick himself, but he was denied by Federico Ravaglia.

Trott wasn’t called upon too often, though when he was, he showed his quality like in the early exchanges against Boadu. With ten minutes remaining, our number one made an excellent diving save to deny Mamadou Doumbia one-on-one.

City welcomed Robinson into the game after 82 game and he made it two goals in two games with a smart low finish three minutes after coming on.

Frustratingly, Watford stole Trott’s clean sheet from him when Hector Kyprianou headed in at close range with three minutes remaining.

The Bluebirds go above their opponents in the Sky Bet Championship following this win, with City's next match coming this weekend up in Middlesbrough.
