PRE-MATCH TRIBUTE | LEN ASHURST REMEMBERED
Before Saturday's match with Reading, the Bluebirds faithful will be asked to join a minute of applause, as we remember City great Len Ashurst.
The two-time Cardiff City manager sadly passed away last weekend, aged 82. Len was born in Liverpool on March 10th, 1939, and after playing for his hometown club at youth level, went onto appear over 400 times in the professional game for Sunderland. He still holds the record for outfield appearances for the Black Cats to this day. After this remarkable achievement, Len finished his playing career at Hartlepool from 1970, where he would make his managerial bow, taking over the side.
After becoming Newport County's most successful manager ever, leading the team to promotion, a Welsh Cup triumph and a European Cup Winners' Cup quarter final between 1978-82, Len took over the Bluebirds. He spent two years at Ninian Park, overseeing promotion as Third Division runners-up in 1982/83, before returning to manage his beloved Sunderland.
Ashurst returned to the Welsh capital for a second time from September 1989, taking over the reins from Frank Burrows following his first spell in charge. He led us for two further seasons.
Our thoughts are with Len’s loved ones. Forever a Bluebird!

Together Against Discrimination
Football is for everyone. We might support different teams, but football unites and inspires us.
It is a game with many opinions. But there is one on which we should all agree.
Racism and discrimination is not welcome in our game. So if you hear it, report it - whether in the street, at Cardiff City Stadium or online.
And when you see players taking the knee ahead of the game as a simple and peaceful act of protest this season, please respect their choice.
Because we are all Together Against Discrimination.
