Pre-Match Press - Middlesbrough | Joel Bagan

Joel Bagan
Joel Bagan addressed the press at CCS this morning, as the Bluebirds prepare for the long journey to Middlesbrough on Saturday.

"It will be another tough test against Middlesbrough, but coming off the back of that win that we had on Tuesday night, we'll be going into it confident." Joel began.

"I think there's been a real switch of mentality within the team. We're not afraid to play anyone; we know Middlesbrough are a good team, but for example last season when we played Chelsea in the cup, we went after them. I know we lost the game, but for large periods we went toe-to-toe with them.

"I think we've had a few games at home this season, Stoke, Sheffield United, when on another day we could have scored four or five goals. It's been frustrating at times, but we knew that at some point a team was going to be on the end of a result like Tuesday."

The Bluebirds are searching for their first away win of the campaign, but the 25-year-old believes that City's style of play will soon lead to results on the road.

"We knew as a team that on Saturday we were nowhere near good enough against Blackburn, and probably didn't deserve anything out of the game. But for the most part this season, we feel like the performances we've been putting in have been more than good enough. That's why everyone is staying positive, because we know that we are causing a lot of problems for teams.

"We're in a much better place as a team than we were the last time we were in the Championship. The game is quicker, the players are better technically, more powerful, but I think everyone has adapted to it well. In games, when you're playing, I definitely feel that we're competing a lot better.

"Brian [Barry-Murphy] is a massive part of that, and the staff he brought in. Every player knows their roles and responsibilities. There is a clear way of playing; the tactical side that Brian and his staff go into, I've never seen that before. At the same time, I feel like every player has so much freedom on the pitch as well."

Joel also spoke about his recent international debut, having featured for the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Nations League earlier this month.

He said: "It was a massive moment for me. I played for the U21s a few years ago, and I've had a few years where I've had to wait and work hard in training. To have that moment, and to make two appearances, was amazing.

"My grandparents were from Cork, on my mum's side. My parents, my girlfriend and my brother came over to watch. It was nice to have them there. I have so much to thank my parents for; I wouldn't be in this position today if it wasn't for all the sacrifices they made.

"Now I've had a taste for it, I want it to be a more regular thing. Hopefully I can get back into the squad for next month. With the EUROs coming up, this is the best time to try and stay in the squad, with exciting times ahead."
