Pre-Match Press - Wigan Athletic | Brian Barry-Murphy

Brian Barry-Murphy addressed the press ahead of City's weekend trip to Wigan Athletic.

"The expectation is that it will be a very difficult game." Brian explained. "It goes without saying, since Tuesday finished our full focus has gone onto Wigan, Ryan Lowe and his team.

"We saw a lot of what we want to be on Tuesday, and in the previous two away games we haven't performed to the level or the standard that we want. The team is very clear on what the standards we've set are, and we're looking to improve those all the time. Saturday will be the next test of that.

"The players seem very experienced at it [travelling], so they've been advising me on how to get through it! I think it can be a really positive experience to spend so much time together, on a coach or in hotels. It can really help to build relationships, and to understand eachother better as staff and players alike.

"It's probably different for the supporters - I think it's harder for them to do the miles that they've done with families and with the expenses what they are. We'll try and give them a performance on Saturday when I think we'll be backed by a massive following at Wigan. That will be very much at the forefront of our minds."

Brian continued by giving a fitness update, with Ronan Kpakio ruled out for Saturday's match at the Brick Community Stadium.

"Ronan's scan is really positive - there is no tear to the bottom of his foot, which we were slightly concerned about. He won't be available for Saturday, but there's no long-term damage or anticipated prolonged absence from the team. I can't be sure when he'll be back in, because injuries at the bottom of the foot can be quite sore from my experience.

"Dylan Lawlor will train today for the first time since last Thursday or Friday. We haven't had him with us since then, so we'll see how he goes today and tomorrow. I wouldn't be sure that he'll be involved on Saturday, but we're definitely more than hopeful that he'll be back in with us for Tuesday. I wouldn't rule him out of Saturday either, but that will be based on how he does today and tomorrow.

"Alex Robertson is back in full training, and he has to show that he's ready to compete with the other players. At the moment he's not, based on a number of factors. He obviously got injured in the last game of pre-season, so he will be available once he reaches the level of intensity that's required within the group."

Saturday's fixture gives the Bluebirds an opportunity to get back to winning ways in the league, following on from our midweek victory in the Carabao Cup.

Brian said: "I think you saw when we played Bradford last week, we didn't play the game without the ball how we wanted to. Our pressing was okay at times but not consistent enough, and we didn't defend against them in any way, shape or form the way we'd want. In possession we were okay; we created good chances but weren't good enough to take them.

"But you saw what it looked like for us on Tuesday, when we played at the intensity that we want to be. That means when we press going forward, but also when the opponents play beyond us and attack our goal - the speed and intensity of how we recover and defend our goal has to be there in every single moment of the game.

"By nature, it won't be there at every moment when you're so early into forming a group. There have been certain times this season when it's been good, and on Tuesday it was really good, but it still can be better based on the demands we want to have within the team."
