Remembering Aberfan

Sixty years ago today on October 21st 1966, the small South Wales coal mining village of Aberfan in the Merthyr Vale was devastated.

An avalanche of coal waste crashed into Pant Glas Junior School and nearby houses on that fateful day, killing 144 people – 116 of them children.

The Cardiff City squad and management were joined by Ken Choo and Club executives in Aberfan yesterday as we paid our respects to the Aberfan community.

Ahead of Saturday’s kick-off with Birmingham City, a minute’s silence will be held in memory of those who lost their lives. Players of Cardiff City Football Club and Birmingham City Football Club will wear black armbands as a mark of respect.

Our game will be dedicated to a generation lost – and the courage and determination of the Aberfan survivors and their families.

Today, and always, we remember Aberfan.
