Rubin post-Peterborough United | A proud day for everyone

Rubin Colwill celebrates scoring for Cardiff City FC
Rubin Colwill spoke to the press after Cardiff City’s opening day win over Peterborough United.

“It was a great day, not just for me personally but for everybody involved in pre-season and everything that we’ve done so far,” Rubin began.

“There was a big buildup to today with a lot of new ideas and new things we’ve been working on. We put in a really good performance, showed a lot of togetherness and character to come back, and we can kick on from here.”

“We all want to play exciting football, play attacking football, being on the front foot and winning the ball back. From the goalkeeper up to the striker, everyone wants to be involved in what we’re trying to create. It’s exciting for everybody and we’re all buying into it.”

In Calum Chambers’ absence due to suspension, Colwill captained the side today, and it was an experience the Academy graduate enjoyed.

“It’s a big responsibility,” Rubin continued. “I thought through what I needed to do and what was required from me, but once you accept that responsibility, it’s almost freeing to have that weight on your shoulders and to try and help everybody get through the game.

“That responsibility and that maturity comes naturally really when you’ve been around the team long enough. I’m probably one of the more experienced players in the squad now, and leadership and responsibility comes naturally with time. It’s something I enjoyed doing too.

“Responsibility can do different things to different people. When responsibility has been placed on my shoulders in age group teams or in cup games, I feel like I’ve stood up to that.

"I’ve always done well with responsibility, and being captain today was something I was really looking forward to. My initial reaction to being asked was just being proud that the manager and the squad believe in me that much.”

Colwill captained a starting eleven today that featured only one player over the age of 23. The skipper ended by saying this young group are hungry to bring success to the Club.

“What we’re doing is probably a bit different to what a number of other clubs have done,” Rubin concluded. “We’ve trusted in what we’ve got is good enough, and it is good enough.

"I’m fully confident in every player in that changing room, and that we are capable of winning this league and get promoted while improving ourselves from within. There’s more than enough quality and ability here at this club already for us to do that. If we can extract that quality, we’ll be fine.”
