U18 | Cardiff City 0-1 Cheltenham Town

U18 Match Centre Graphic for City vs. Cheltenham Town
City's U18s exited the FA Youth Cup in the First Round after a narrow defeat to Cheltenham Town.

Match Summary

The first chance of the game fell to City’s Mannie Barton, whose effort deflected just wide of the post. It was the visitors, however, who took the lead with just over ten minutes played. Fred King’s cutback pass found Archie Hill, who struck the ball home from close range.

City were forced into an early change, as Robert Tankiewicz was replaced by Axel Donczew. Shortly afterwards, the Robins almost doubled their lead through Ieuan Bailey, but his curling free-kick cannoned off the post.

The young Bluebirds had an opportunity to level the score before the break, as Jack Sykes drove into the box, but he was unable to get a shot away.

Daniel Higgins was called into early action in the second half, as the City keeper produced an excellent diving save to deny Charlie Croose

Being behind, the young Bluebirds pushed for an equaliser. A driving run from Donczew saw him feed Harry Watts through, but he couldn’t quite find the target with his effort.

City created one more chance in the dying moments, as Riley Hillaire-Clark found Leeyon Phelan, who slammed the ball goalwards, but Mamadou Diallo, in the Cheltenham goal, reacted quickly to secure the win for the visitors. The final whistle blew, resulting in City bowing out of the competition.

The young Bluebirds return to league action on Saturday, November 1st, as they travel to Florence Park to face Colchester United – 11am KO.
