Cardiff City’s U21 side returned to winning ways with a convincing victory over the Addicks on Tuesday...
Match Summary
The young Bluebirds added three points to their PDL tally on Tuesday afternoon, claiming victory away from home against Charlton Athletic.
City went in ahead by a goal at the break, thanks to an early strike from Luke Pearce.
The second half saw the visitors extend their lead, as both Troy Perrett and Jake Davies added their names to the scoresheet in South-east London.
The win puts City in good stead ahead of a busy run of upcoming fixtures, beginning with Friday night's Premier League Cup away fixture against Burnley - KO at 7pm.
PRE-MATCH | GABRIEL KEITA
Ahead of the contest, defender Gabriel Keita said: “The squad and I are excited for Tuesday’s game against Charlton. The game against Arsenal in the Vertu Trophy has really put a spring in our step. It really shows that we’re ready for any kind of challenge that comes our way.
“The Arsenal game has shown not just Cardiff City fans, but other teams in the league what we can do. It has shown that we’re able to compete against anyone, regardless of whether it’s Arsenal or any team in our league. It is all up for grabs, so it is important for us to do what we need to do to get three points.
City’s U21s are looking to return to winning ways in the league after back-to-back defeats to Bournemouth and QPR before the international break. “The bounce back has to be very purposeful because two defeats on the bounce are not ideal, so all focus is now put back onto the league and winning the next game and the games ahead.
“Every game is a tough game, so I think Charlton will be the same. They are strong and technically good, so I feel like it will be a good game for both teams.”
RECENT RESULTS
Last time out, the U21s were narrowly defeated by Queens Park Rangers.
It only took nine minutes for the Bluebirds to take the lead, as Troy Perrett beat the offside trap before clipping the ball over the onrushing keeper and into the bottom corner. City dominated the first half in terms of possession but found themselves heading into half time behind. Two goals in quick succession from Alex Aoraha and Jake Coomes meant the R's held a 2-1 lead at half time.
Darren Purse's side came out with a different intensity at the start of the second half. Chances began to come their way, but they couldn't test Matteo Salamon in the QPR net. However, with 20 minutes remaining, City had a chance to equalise from the penalty spot after a foul on Jake Davies. Perrett stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to make the scores level. But it was QPR who won the match seven minutes from time, as Philip Sanyaolu's strike from distance found the far corner.
