The young Bluebirds’ seven-game unbeaten run in the Professional Development League came to an end on Friday afternoon as they were defeated 3-0 by Millwall.
MATCH SUMMARY
The hosts began with a real intensity and found their opening goal of the afternoon with just seven minutes on the clock. Midfielder Sacha Tsugita Vieira found the net from close range, assisted by Jaydon Thomas-Smith.
City came in search for an equaliser, but fell two behind via an unfortunate deflection off Noah Williams from a Zak Lovelace effort, which it took the ball beyond Jake Dennis in the 34th minute.
The young Lions took a two-goal lead into the break, but Matthew Bloxham’s side responded well in search for a route back into the contest.
Dan Ola’s strike early into the second half very nearly brough City back into the game, but his effort was tipped just wide of the post after a wicked deflection. Just after the hour mark, Millwall found an all-important third goal through Lovelace, who struck from inside the 18-yard box.
Thierrry Katsukunya’s header was saved late on by Jakub Przewoźny as the game approached additional time, denying City what would have been a consolation goal.
The result marked only City’s second Professional Development League defeat of the season, and first since late August, ending their seven-game unbeaten run.
The young Bluebirds will now turn their attention to hosting Plymouth Argyle in the Premier League Cup on Friday, November 20th, with kick-off at 7pm, following the international break.
PRE-MATCH | CHARLIE O’BRIEN
“I don’t want to glorify a loss, but as a team I felt we put in a really good performance against Bournemouth on Monday. Overall, the result didn’t go our way, but we’re looking to put that right against Millwall now.
“In the league we have put in some strong performances, we’ve only been defeated once. If we can extend that unbeaten streak by getting another three points, it’ll put us in a really good position heading into the international break.
“We’ve felt we’ve been unfortunate in a couple of games this season, we should have come away with three points and we haven’t. I think if we keep plugging away, scoring even more goals and importantly keeping clean sheets, we can turn a few of those draws into wins now.
“I think it’s a false position where Millwall are in the league, as they’ve played so many less games than everyone else. They’re always a tough team to face, they’re always physical, very direct, and especially down at their ground, they make it really difficult for you.
“We’re not looking at the league table heading into this one. We’ve got a great attitude as a group knowing they are a good side, and we know what we have to do to come away with the three points.”
LAST TIME OUT
City’s U21s were defeated 3-2 by AFC Bournemouth in an enthralling five-goal encounter at the Wyatt Homes Stadium on Monday evening.
The hosts took an early two-goal advantage in the first half, thanks to a brace from midfielder Dacosta Gonzalez.
Matthew Bloxham’s side responded excellently, with Riley Hilaire-Clarke halving the deficit on the stroke of half-time, marking the winger’s first goal of the season.
Hilaire-Clarke had a chance to double his tally seconds after the second half began but was denied by a superb last-ditch clearance from the experienced Max Aarons.
The Cherries found an all-important third goal to restore their two-goal advantage in the 63rd minute, when Daniel Jebbison spun in behind and found the roof of the net.
City continued to show a real resilience, with their efforts rewarded in the 87th minute when Noah Williams pulled one back from an Ellis Yorke corner to make it 3-2.
Thierry Katsukunya very nearly rescued a point in the final few seconds but saw his long-range effort denied by Mack Allan in the Bournemouth goal.
The result leaves City on six points after four matches in Group B of the Premier League Cup, sitting in second place.
With two group-stage fixtures remaining, the young Bluebirds remain firmly in contention to progress to the knockout stages.
OPPOSITION FOCUS
The Lions endured a difficult start to their 2026/27 campaign, losing their opening five matches in all competitions.
However, in recent weeks, the south-east London side have shown real improvements, defeating rivals West Ham 1-0 in the Premier League Cup at The Den last month.
They also recorded their first league victory of the season, dispatching Bristol City 3-1 just over a week ago at the Robins High Performance Centre.
In the dugout is former Bluebirds striker Kevin Nugent, who spent over four and a half years in South Wales, making 99 appearances and scoring 25 goals.
His side have faced disruption this season, fulfilling just five Professional Development league fixtures, winning one of those.
In terms of the league standings, Nugent's side sit in 17th place, ten points behind City, having played three games fewer.
