Wigan Athletic reaction | Brian Barry-Murphy

Cardiff City Head Coach Brian Barry-Murphy spoke to the press after the Bluebirds’ victory over Wigan Athletic.

“We would have liked to have scored more goals and to make it more comfortable near the end,” Brian began. “It would have been nice to give the supporters what they wanted, but the efforts of the players in the past two weeks to win three and draw one over this ten-day period is something that I’m very grateful for.

“The challenge for us is that we want to create enough excitement in the stadium to give the supporters what they want and score the goals to make the end of the game easier. Wigan are very good at what they do, which is to sit deep and frustrate teams, and they've had a lot of success doing that. The longer the game goes on and the longer you haven't got the second goal, there's always that element of they could score, and then all of a sudden it becomes a difficult day.”

The win at Cardiff City Stadium means it’s eight league wins in a row in the capital, City’s best home run since 2012.

“It’s been brilliant for us playing at home this season,” Brian continued. “We want to continue the good form we’ve got here, and every time we play at Cardiff City Stadium, we want to keep playing the way that we want to play, to keep scoring goals, and to keep clean sheets. To continue this run is very important in order to help us to where we want to be.”

The Bluebirds remain top of Sky Bet League One after a gruelling December, and the boss is keen for his team to continue that good work into the coming months.

“It’s important for us to focus on ourselves and to keep improving all the time,” Brian ended. “I’m so pleased with the players and how they are doing just that. I feel very lucky to be with them and managing them. They are so dedicated and focused on being in the best possible conditions for these games, and that’s been reflected in our performances.

“We’re looking forward to finally having a rest day tomorrow and then we will be back in on Tuesday to prepare for Leyton Orient, which should be a cracker going off what happened in the corresponding fixture at home.”
