CITY VICTORIES AT NORWICH

Club News

We look back at past victories at Carrow Road

In all the years that we have played Norwich City at their various home grounds – The Nest and Carrow Road – since we first met them in the Southern League First Division during 1913/14, we have only won twice in League and Cup.

Those two occasions were in the old Division Two on 21st April, 1971 when we were 2-1 winners, and in the Championship on 1st September 2007 when Peter Whittingham and Roger Johnson scored in our 2-1 victory.

Interestingly, all the goals at Carrow Road that day were scored by either past or present Cardiff City players. Simon Lappin opened the scoring for his former club Norwich on that occasion, it turned out to be his final league goal for the Canaries, despite only leaving Norfolk for the Bluebirds in November 2012. Current City stopper David Marshall was also in goal for the Canaries that day.

That 1971 victory came as we chased promotion from the Second Division when only two clubs went up. Our challenge had taken a blow in the previous match when relegation-threatened Watford had been 1-0 winners at Ninian Park, but we could still have made it.

Brian Clark and Alan Warboys scored for us at Carrow Road, Peter Silvester scoring for Norwich. But we were to finish in third place, three points behind the second promotion spot (two points per win) with Leicester City on 59 points and Sheffield United on 56 points both going up. Norwich City finished in tenth position.
