MATCH PREVIEW: CARDIFF CITY vs BRISTOL CITY

Match Previews

Venue: Cardiff City Stadium
Date: Monday 26th October, 7:45pm K.O.

Cardiff City and Bristol City meet in the Welsh Capital for the first Severnside Derby since the 2012/13 season.

THE OPPOSITION

Bristol City are starting to find their feet in the Sky Bet Championship after enduring a tough opening ten fixtures, in which they tasted victory on just one occasion.

In recent weeks, successive draws with MK Dons and Ipswich Town suggested that Steve Cotterill’s men had cleared that initial hurdle. A 2-0 home victory over Nottingham Forest then took them out of the relegation zone, while they were unfortunate in a narrow defeat to league leaders Brighton & Hove Albion last Tuesday.

Jonathan Kodjia is the Robins' star man, having netted six goals since joining from Angers in the summer. Skipper Aaron Wilbraham has also starred up front, while Cotterill has strengthened his side with a number of loan recruits, including Nathan Baker, Elliott Bennett and Simon Cox.

CLUB CONNECTIONS

One player fondly remembered on both sides of the River Severn is legendary forward Brian Clark.

Brian’s father, Don, also played for Bristol City and still holds their Club record for the most goals in a season, scoring forty-two in 1946/47. Brian started his career with the Robins and scored regularly over seven years at Ashton Gate, helping them get promoted to Division Two in 1964/65.

After a spell at Huddersfield, Clark signed for Cardiff City in 1968 and went on to write himself into City folklore. He scored 91 goals in 240 matches over two spells in South Wales, including that famous header to defeat Real Madrid in 1971.

MEMORABLE MEETING

Score: Bristol City 0-6 Cardiff City
Venue: Ashton Gate, 25 January 2010

The Bluebirds brushed aside their Severnside Rivals with an astounding 6-0 victory at Ashton Gate.

City got the match underway in emphatic style as Peter Whittingham, Ross McCormack and Michael Chopra all netted within a five minute spell in the first-half. A Liam Fontaine own goal then saw the visitors go in at the break four goals up.

Chopra added a fifth within a minute of the restart before McCormack also doubled his tally to complete the scoring, and round off a sensational performance from Dave Jones’s men.
