MATCH PREVIEW: CARDIFF CITY v ROTHERHAM UNITED

Match Previews

Venue: Cardiff City Stadium
Date: Saturday 23rd January 2016, 3pm K.O.

The Bluebirds take on Rotherham United at Cardiff City Stadium, looking to continue their momentum following last weekend’s 3-1 victory at Molineux.

THE OPPOSITION

Rotherham United travel to face City on the back of a 3-0 defeat to Queen’s Park Rangers last Saturday, and will be looking for a win in South Wales to ensure that they stay outside of the relegation zone.

In order to that, Neil Redfearn’s men would have to prevent the Bluebirds from extending their unbeaten run at Cardiff City Stadium to ten matches.

The Millers’ new signing Luciano Becchio could feature, despite not having played since September 2014. Lee Frecklington will miss the match through injury though, while Farrend Rawson and Lewis Buxton are back in contention.

CLUB CONNECTIONS

The Bluebirds signed Leo Fortune-West from Rotherham United in September of the 2000/01 season. The striker had starred for the Millers in two separate spells – first, netting four goals in five games on loan from Lincoln City, before signing permanently and scoring twenty-six times from sixty-three league appearances.

The cult hero forward went on to record a total of twenty-eight goals in a City shirt, helping to fire the Bluebirds from Division Three up to the second tier.

Fortune-West is not the only former City striker to have also played for the Millers in recent years, with Alex Revell, Adam le Fondre and Alan Lee also fondly remembered for their exploits in South Yorkshire.

MEMORABLE MEETING

The Bluebirds scored three goals in eleven minutes to take home the spoils from the New York Stadium in 2014/15.

Bruno Ecuele Manga powered home a header from Joe Ralls’ corner to open the scoring on twenty-five minutes, before Kiko Macheda added a sublime second within two minutes.

City loanee Conor McAleny then made it three, putting the Bluebirds in prime position before half-time. While Danny Ward headed home a late consolation, City saw out the game to win 3-1 and make it four matches unbeaten on the road.
