MATCH BALL SPONSORS
Charles M Willie (Pitwood) Limited was formed in 1913 by Charles Mark Willie supplying coal from the Welsh valleys and pitwood from France and Portugal.
In 1938, Charles M. Willie & Co (Shipping) Limited was formed to arrange the in house and third-party shipments of this coal outwards and pit wood back to Cardiff and Newport.
In 1978 a decision was made for the Company to go into Ship-owning rather than chartering outside vessels for their business. The first ship was purchased, named the mv Celtic Venture and registered in the Port of Cardiff.
The Company subsequently purchased many secondhand vessels and also built a series of new ships in Turkey during the 1990’s and 2000’s.
Today the Company is still Family owned and is now the largest Welsh flagged ship owning company.
Charles Willie & Co (Shipping) Limited also operates offices in the Humber, Portugal, Spain and Hamburg.
Initially the company was based at the Coal Exchange in Mount Stuart Square, which was the home of the signing of the first ever million-pound cheque.
Following 3 moves within Cardiff the Company now resides in the former Football Association of Wales Building based at Neptune Court, Cardiff.
The Family members and Owners of the Willie Group are proud to be associated with Cardiff City Football Club and wish them every success in 2024.
