City vs. Derby County | Five Familiar Faces

History
As City prepare to face Derby County at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night, we take a look at five players to have represented both clubs.
David Marshall

David Marshall

Marshall became a Bluebird following Norwich City’s relegation from the Premier League in 2009, making his City debut in a 4-0 win over Scunthorpe United on the opening day of the 2009/10 campaign.

The Scottish shot-stopper went on to become a fans’ favourite at City and was part of the side that were crowned champions of the Championship in 2013, as well as being named the club’s Player of the Year the following season.

Amassing a remarkable 278 appearances for the Bluebirds during his time in the Welsh capital, Marshall had a three-year spell at Hull City and spent a season at Wigan Athletic before his move to Derby County.

Marshall was named captain of the Rams early during his time at the club, but, after finding minutes on the pitch hard to come by this season, signed for Queens Park Rangers in January.

John Brayford

John Brayford

Having had spells at Burton Albion and Crewe Alexandra, Brayford joined Derby County in 2010 and quickly became a key part in the side, playing every minute in both the league and cup competitions in his opening season.

The defender impressed under manager Nigel Clough, so much so that he attracted Premier League interest in the summer of 2013.

Brayford signed for the Bluebirds, who had just been promoted to the top flight, going on to make 26 league appearances for the club during his two years at CCS.

In January 2015, the defender moved on from City, re-uniting with Clough at Sheffield United after an initial loan spell at Bramall Lane the previous season, with the Bluebirds replacing the right-back with the signing of Lee Peltier.

Harry Wilson

Harry Wilson

During his time at Liverpool, Wilson had loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Hull City, before a breakout spell at Derby County.

operating under manager Frank Lampard, the playmaker was a huge success at Pride Park, netting 15 league goals in the Championship.

The Wales international went close to securing promotion with the Rams, missing out in the 2019 Play-Off Final to Aston Villa.

After a season with Premier League outfit Bournemouth, Wilson signed for the Bluebirds on loan, finding the net seven times during his time at the club, including a memorable hat-trick at Birmingham City.

Craig Bryson

Craig Bryson

Having started his career in Scotland with spells at Clyde and Kilmarnock, Bryson travelled south to join Derby County in 2011.

The midfielder quickly made an impression at the club, as he was named County’s Player of the Year in both 2012 and 2014.

With over 200 appearances under his belt for the Rams, Bryson made the switch to the Welsh capital in 2017, signing on a season-long loan.

During his time at CCS, the midfielder netted his first goal for the club in a 2-1 win over Sunderland, going on to make 22 league appearances for City as Neil Warnock's side reach the Premier League.

Tom Lawrence

Tom Lawrence

Talented winger Lawrence joined the Bluebirds in January 2016 on a loan spell from Premier League side Leicester City.

The Welsh international made 14 league appearances for the club, joining Ipswich Town in a further loan spell in the following season.

Lawrence left the Foxes permanently for Derby County in 2017, and was named club captain in July 2021.

The winger has been in fine form for the Rams this season, with nine goals to his tally, but will miss Tuesday night’s trip to CCS through suspension.
