McGuinness pre-Sheffield Wednesday | We’re aiming to get back on track

Interviews
Mark McGuinness spoke to the press ahead of the Bluebirds’ Sky Bet Championship clash against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

City currently sit 12th in the table, while the Owls head into this weekend’s fixture in 23rd.

“The last few results haven’t gone our way,” Macca began. “But, we can’t lose sight of what we’ve achieved so far. We’re in a good position. We’re not far from we want to be and we’ve worked on a few things to get us back there. Saturday is a good opportunity to get back on track.

“We’ve got a great squad and we’re a good team with a great team spirit. We’ve built something so far this season, we’re halfway through now, still a long way to go and a lot of points to play for. Hopefully, we can build on that and get to where we want to get to.

“Everyone who follows the Championship knows that it changes a lot. People get on runs towards the back end of the season, people drop off, but there’s always an opportunity there. We’ve got to keep focused on what we want to achieve and what we want to do, which we are.

“Things can change very quickly. We’ve got four games now up until the New Year, so there are a lot of points there, a lot of games and a lot of opportunity for us.

"We’re very focused on what we want to do. We’re not looking too far into the future, we’re taking each game as it comes, and hopefully we’re building towards somewhere that we want to be.”

The City defender spent half of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, making 17 league appearances and scoring once.

Ahead of facing his former club, Macca continued: “I really enjoyed my time at Sheffield Wednesday. It was a great opportunity for me to reset and show what I was capable of at the time. I’m happy that they’re getting back on track, but I’m very focused on my job with this team and we’re very much focused in house on what we want to do.

“For me, going back there and seeing a few of the guys will be nice, but at the end of the day, I have a job to do. Cardiff has been my home for the last three years. I’ve enjoyed being here and living here. I have great connections with the boys here. I love the Club and I wanted to come back and get the Club to where it should be. This season, we seem to be getting on the right track, hence why I signed a new contract here.”

The Bluebirds have had a consistent centre-back pairing of McGuinness and summer recruit Dimitrios Goutas, who have formed a strong partnership this season.

“It’s probably a bit different to what Dimi was used to previously,” Macca added. “Anyone coming to the Championship, it’s probably a big surprise, playing the amount of games and the style of football, but he’s been great.

“I’ve really enjoyed playing alongside him and it’s been great to have a relationship within a team, especially as a centre-back partner. It helps me and it helps him as well. It’s not just on the field, but off the field as well, he’s interactive with the squad and he has some good connections. Hopefully, we can continue our partnership going forward.”
