Cardiff City's U21 side will head into Friday's fixture looking for their first win of the 2023/24 league campaign, following two hard-fought draws from their most recent matches. With the young Bluebirds were held by Sheffield Wednesday last time at CCS, Joel Colwill secured another point for City later in the week against Burnley, with an injury time equaliser deservedly earning City draw away from home.

Darren Purse

Ahead of Friday's fixture, U21s Manager Darren Purse shared his expectations from the match, reflecting on the opportunity for the young Bluebirds to perform in front of a home crowd at CCS:

"From last time out, we have to give full credit to the boys for showing some really good character to come from behind twice," began Darren. "It's been a good week in training, and we're looking forward to being back at CCS to host a tough Barnsley side.

"I think that any opportunity to play in the stadium is fantastic; the surroundings are different to what they experience at Leckwith, so it's good for the boys to be used to the environment and facilities, and they're familiar if they're called up to be involved with the First Team.

"We've had a few away games so far where the travel has been long, but adapting to that as part of their pre-match schedule is key for that side of their development. Now that we're back home, for us it's about expressing ourselves.

"We've had another good week with Cian Ashford playing for the First Team in a brilliant win against Birmingham City. The feedback that he's received since playing can now be put into practice for the U21 side, so that next time he's involved with the First Team, he'll be ready to express himself in an even better manner."
