On This Day | Norwich City 0-2 Cardiff City

History

On this day in 2018, the Bluebirds secured one of the most important victories of their promotion campaign.

Consecutive defeats to Wolves and Aston Villa had seen Fulham overtake City into second place, albeit having played a game more.

With just five matches remaining, the Bluebirds would need to rediscover the form that had seen them unbeaten in 13 matches since the festive period.

That started at Carrow Road, as City put in a perfect counter-attacking performance, soaking up the pressure before two late killer blows.

Their first came in the 86th minute as the hosts failed to clear their lines from Aron Gunnarsson's long throw.

After Sean Morrison headed the ball back into the danger area, substitute Kenneth Zohore saw his header saved by Angus Gunn.

Not to be deterred, the striker regathered the ball and, from the narrowest of angles, slotted it inside the near post for another all-important City goal.

A first ever league double over the Canaries was confirmed deep into added time, as Junior Hoilett latched onto a loose ball following Craig Bryson's forward header.

City's no. 33 had a split-second to work with, but produced an instinctive half-volley with the outside of his right boot, securing victory in some style to the delight of the travelling fans.

Their journey home was made all the sweeter courtesy of a 94th minute Neal Maupay equaliser at Craven Cottage; Fulham's draw with Brentford putting the Bluebirds well and truly in the driving seat.
