The Bluebirds struck four on the road, returning to winning ways in some style in South Yorkshire!
Brian Barry-Murphy made four changes to the starting XI from the team that were defeated at Plymouth Argyle last weekend. Rubin Colwill, Dylan Lawlor, Ryan Wintle and Cian Ashford were welcomed back into the team, with Calum Chambers, David Turnbull and Chris Willock dropping to the bench, while Omari Kellyman missed out through injury.
City's first chance of the game came with 11 minutes gone, as Ollie Tanner found some space down the right side. The winger cut in and got a low shot away, with goalkeeper Thimothée Lo-Tutala tipping away the effort.
The hosts had a good opportunity of their own two minutes later, as a long clearance caught out the City back-line. Forward Brandon Hanlan's strike looked goalbound, before defender Lawlor got a hugely important touch on it, taking the ball over the bar to safety.
There was a definite impact to the quality of football on display, with the condition of the pitch and the rainy weather stopping the usual passing style of BBM's men. In typical City fashion this season though, our XI found a way.
It was a delightful, clipped through ball from Lawlor after 26 minutes that unlocked the Doncaster Rovers defence, finding Alex Robertson's run in behind. The Australian midfielder expertly controlled the ball on his chest before finding a composed finish to give the Bluebirds the lead.
It wasn't one way traffic in the opening half though, and the hosts had a good chance to level with 34 minutes gone. However, Harry Clifton got his finish all wrong after the ball ricocheted back his way. The lively Hanlan headed wide three minutes after also.
City were playing on Donny's high line, looking to get in behind at every opportunity. Joel and Rubin Colwill combined to make this happen with the half drawing to a close, but Cian Ashford could only head into the side netting on this occasion.
While the pitch caused issues in the first half, you'd have thought it was a perfect carpet the way Welsh international Lawlor started the second half for the Bluebirds. Picking up the ball in his own half, Dylan carried it the entire length of the opposition half, before picking his spot to give City a two-goal advantage in the most spectacular of ways.
City used this second goal to up their levels, and made it three 11 minutes into the second half. Rubin Colwill impressed throughout with his unpredictable play in the false nine role and had a big hand in the third strike. Rubin's low cross was diverted into the net by winger Ashford, who looked surprised while celebrating having somehow found a way to get the ball into the net under intense pressure from his marker.
Rubin's younger brother Joel, in fine form himself, looked to add a fourth goal after 65 minutes, but Lo-Tutala stopped the young Bluebird as he attempted to round the shot stopper.
City added a fourth goal in added on time. Substitute Callum Robinson applied a clinical finish to capitalise on a defensive error from the hosts.
Next up for the Bluebirds is a top of the table clash with Lincoln City back in the Welsh capital next Saturday lunchtime. Not one to be missed!
