Defensive stalwart commits future to the Bluebirds...

We are delighted to announce that Matt Connolly has signed an extension to his current Cardiff City deal. The new contract will keep Matt with the Bluebirds until the summer of 2019.

Having signed for the Club in the summer of 2012, twenty-eight year-old Matt has made ninety-five City appearances and scored six goals. The latest of those came in a 2-0 win over Reading back in November.

Matt’s performances at the heart of the Bluebirds’ defence this season have been of an exceptional standard, with him having started all twenty-seven Sky Bet Championship fixtures to date – in conjunction to two Capital One Cup games.

Speaking of the news, Cardiff City CEO, Ken Choo, said: “Securing the services of Matt on a long-term deal was of huge importance to us this season.

“His performances on the field have been of an exceptional standard, whilst his character is second to none.

“We want players at Cardiff City, like Matt, who show their commitment to the cause by the way they handle themselves on and off the field.

“Despite last week being particularly testing, I think the win at Wolves on Saturday – and seeing Matt put pen to paper until 2019 – highlights that we are uniting as a Football Club and pressing forward so as to achieve our goals.”

Speaking exclusively to Cardiff City Player – in an interview that you can watch in this Thursday’s episode of ‘In The City’, Matt added: “I’m really pleased to have signed a new deal with the Club and am confident that we can push on again.

"All of us, as players, believe that we have the ability to get back to the Premier League and that was definitely part of my thinking in signing this new deal. I’ve enjoyed promotions in recent years and that’s what my focus is again in 2016.

“As a group, we’re very determined to take the Club forward. The Club has done a great job in keeping our core together which is very important for long-term success. As players we appreciate that.

“It’s important that the fans get behind us as always for the remainder of the season and hopefully we can realise our ambitions together.”
