HIGHLIGHTS | ABERGAVENNY WOMEN 2-2 CARDIFF CITY FC WOMEN

Cardiff City FC Women drew 2-2 with Abergavenny Women on Wednesday evening at the Pen-Y-Pound Stadium.

The first half was end-to-end with chances flowing for both sides - and it started as such. Amy Thrupp's shot from distance after two minutes was held well by City goalkeeper Charlotte Hastings before Danielle Green volleyed over for the Bluebirds two minutes later.

The hosts found the opening goal with five minutes on the clock. Lyndsey Davies volleying her side into the lead from close range. City though have been in determined form of late - responding well to the set back of a defeat against Abergavenny at the start of March, and refused to let this early goal deter them. Iain Darbyshire's side levelling the game four minutes after falling behind.

It was a neat team move that helped City break through with forwards combining. Catherine Walsh took a heavy blow in the build-up but she did superbly to find Phoebie Poole, and our top scorer made no mistake to net her seventh WPWL goal of the campaign with a low, powerful strike.

The chances continued. Mali Summers’ free kick was saved by Hastings after 17 minutes, while Danielle Broadhurst saw a shot blocked and a second saved in the following minutes.

City’s No.23 Hastings was called into action again after 33 minutes, making an important stop to deny Eliza Atkins at close range, but there was little the goalkeeper could do after 40 minutes, with the hosts retaking the advantage. The dangerous Thrupp ran clear, and her powerful shot evaded Hastings, bouncing into the net off the inside of the far post to give Abergavenny a half-time lead.

The first half was full of chances for both sides - but the second was a different affair. City dominated from the opening whistle.

A half-time substitution saw forward Jasmine Simpson return to action following injury, and she almost had the perfect impact. Simpson’s shot just saved by Abergavenny ‘keeper Zara Mujica Pernalete five minutes into the second half.

The opportunities kept coming as the Bluebirds retained possession and kept building forward. A deflected effort nearly gave City an own goal after 54 minutes, but the ball bounced wide while Siobhan Walsh's powerful free kick was held eight minutes after.

Simpson and Poole both went close again soon after. As time went on, it felt like it wouldn't be City's day. Dominating the match, creating chance after chance, but fortune and the finishing touch evading them.

Thankfully, that second goal did arrive with 15 minutes to go. Simpson adding her third goal of the campaign, much to the delight of her teammates.

City weren't settling though. After finding an equaliser, they set out to grab the winner. Poole & substitute Mikayla Cook saw opportunities miss the target late on either side of a good chance for Abergavenny forward Davies, who also shot off goal.

The game eventually finishing level following a highly enjoyable WPWL clash. City have a rare weekend off league action ahead of them, and will return to the WPWL on Sunday, April 18th, 2021 with a trip to Aberystwyth Town Ladies.
