WPWL Cup Match Report | Cyncoed Ladies 2-7 Cardiff City FC Women

Women
In a dominant performance, Cardiff City FC Women side defeated Cyncoed Ladies 7-2 in Group Two of the WPWL Cup at USW Sport Park on Sunday afternoon.

A Phoebie Poole hat-trick and Sophie Norman brace were joined by goals from Kate Jeremiah and Kanisha Underdown

Iain Darbyshire made five changes from last time out as Welsh international Claire Skinner, Ffion Price, Sophie Norman, Sydney Tiiman and Kate Jeremiah started.

The Bluebirds got off to a flying start. 16-year-old forward Phoebie Poole got on the end of Zoe Atkins’ through-ball, before firing across goal and into the bottom corner.

The dangerous Poole added her third City goal in just two appearance 12 minutes later. City’s No.18 powerfully struck past Molly Arnesen from the edge the area.

Midfielder Norman got in on the act with 21 minutes played. Forward Atkins’ cut-back from the right flank was met by the lethal boot of the former Cyncoed player, who finished with aplomb.

The home side pulled a goal back with one minute prior to the half hour mark. Millie Jones’ rising shot from within the area found the inner roof of the net.

Cardiff City went on to score two more before the break. Forward Jeremiah curled into the bottom corner after 37 minutes and midfielder Kanisha Underdown hammered in from range, three minutes later.

After the interval, the Bluebirds hunted for their sixth goal, but play tightened. Cyncoed scored with 69 minutes gone through Alison Witts’ close range finish.

City responded three minutes later with powerful Poole. The young forward secured her hat-trick on a fine second outing as a Bluebird, shrugging off the opposing defenders to head in from a corner.

Determined Norman added the Bluebirds’ seventh and her second goal shortly after. The thunderbolt of an attempt from outside the box was not being stopped by goalkeeper Arnesen.

That proved to be the end of the goals, as Cardiff City ruthlessly gained three points from their first fixture in the WPWL Cup.
